The Owner
Hi! I'm Aleecia!
I've always loved fashion from an early age and though my mother was a seamstress, I never thought I would be doing the same thing... especially after being in the corporate world doing IT related jobs for years! Even with a thriving career I felt incomplete, I could never get rid of my love for creating things with my hands, dressing up and my entrepreneurial spirit. This is how Make Me Fancy was born. Initially I made women's wear for years and later branched out into making high-quality competitive dance costumes for dance studios across the GTA. I also own my own annual fashion show called Toronto Fashion Experience which is typically held in the Spring and features local designers across Toronto.
In 2023, I decided to open my own studio and created what I wish I had as a child... a fun environment that allows kids to create clothes that suit their style. Be warned, I'm pretty much a child at heart, so don't be shocked to hear that we occasionally break out into a karaoke session while we sew, share funny (sometimes embarrassing) stories or take breaks to have cup noodles! This is fortunately also why your kids will enjoy every second of the classes we have together. I also ensure anyone who joins my team has the same child-like spirit and allows your kids to be kids as we teach them this valuable skill.
I look forward to teaching your child how to sew their own clothes, and seeing their faces when they've seen what they've made! This is the most rewarding part! Hope to see your child in the studio!

Why are kids sewing classes a great idea?
Teaching kids to sew is an incredibly valuable and rewarding endeavor with a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond the sewing machine. Here are some compelling reasons why kids should learn to sew and the skills they can develop: Creativity and Self-Expression: Sewing allows children to unleash their creativity and express themselves through fabric, colors, and patterns. Sewing gives them a sense of accomplishment and pride in their unique creations. Problem-Solving Skills: Sewing involves following patterns, making measurements, and solving problems along the way. Kids learn to think critically and make decisions as they work through sewing projects, enhancing their problem-solving abilities. Fine Motor Skills: Sewing requires precise hand-eye coordination, helping kids develop fine motor skills. The dexterity needed to thread a needle, stitch evenly, and manipulate fabric improves their overall motor skills, which can be beneficial in various other activities. Patience and Focus: Sewing demands patience and attention to detail. Children learn to concentrate on the task at hand, follow step-by-step instructions, and take their time to ensure quality results, which are valuable skills in many aspects of life. Math Skills: Sewing involves measurements, calculations, and geometry as kids cut, measure, and assemble fabric pieces. These practical math skills are applied in a hands-on context, making learning math more engaging and relatable. Creativity and Design Thinking: Sewing encourages kids to think creatively and solve design challenges. They learn to visualize and plan their projects, choose fabric combinations, and make design decisions, fostering their creative thinking skills. Self-Reliance: Sewing empowers kids to be self-reliant and independent. They can repair their clothing, sew on buttons, and mend tears, reducing waste and teaching them practical life skills. Cultural Awareness: Exploring different fabrics, patterns, and sewing techniques exposes kids to various cultures and traditions. This can foster an appreciation for diversity and expand their understanding of the world. Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a sewing project gives kids a tangible sense of accomplishment and pride. Seeing their finished creations can boost their self-esteem and confidence, instilling a sense of achievement that carries into other areas of their lives. Sustainability and Environmental Awareness: Teaching kids to sew promotes sustainability by encouraging them to repurpose old clothing, reduce waste, and make environmentally friendly choices. It raises awareness about the impact of consumerism on the environment. In essence, sewing is a versatile and enriching skill that equips children with a wide range of practical and cognitive abilities. It fosters creativity, patience, problem-solving, and independence while promoting environmental consciousness and cultural awareness. Learning to sew is not just about making clothes or crafts; it's about nurturing well-rounded, capable, and confident individuals who can tackle challenges with creativity and resourcefulness.
